NVDC Architects were approached by the clients, a young couple with a growing family, to support them with the refurbishment of the original house and the re-design and substantial enlargement of the house to create a contemporary home fit for the 21st-century lifestyle.
Our design for changing the house layout and expanding the accommodation involved a complete reconfiguring of the house layout on ground level to facilitate the building of a full-depth single-storey extension along the southern boundary and a two-storey rear extension to house a double garage at the lower garden level and a master bedroom suite on ground level, creating a whole life layout.
A key client requirement was that the new extension/s could be built in 2 phases. The new phase 1 wing along the southern boundary has been designed to be traditional in appearance and built in the same stone, style, detailing, and proportions of the existing house on the front elevation while creating a new contemporary family space to the rear. The 2nd phase rear extension has been designed as a modern pavilion set within the rear garden and set off from the rear wall of the house.
The final project scope of refurbishment works included complete re-roof, double glazed timber sash & case windows throughout, underfloor heating and insulation to the entire ground floor, stained glass and cornice restoration, external soft and hard landscaping and external steps and walling, internal remodeling and a complete overhaul of the entire house interior fittings, fixtures, and decoration.
