We are delighted to have recently secured planning consent for a substantial house enlargement project in one of Glasgow’s Southside Conservation areas.
The project involves the formation of a 3-storey side extension and creation of a two-storey rear extension housing a very large light-filled open-plan family space with views to the garden. The covered veranda of this new space provides the family with a sheltered external space that can still be enjoyed on damp Scottish days which are warm enough to sit outside.
A limited material palette of new blonde sandstone, gold-coloured zinc cladding and white render has been chosen to create a sensitive and contextual connection between the contemporary form of the new extensions and the vernacular of the existing house and the houses found in the wider area. The gold-coloured zinc cladding and window frames are a nod to the blonde sandstone of the main house while the contemporary design of the extension and extensive glazing to the rear is an honest reflection of our client’s passion for modern architecture and their desire to open up the house to their large garden grounds to the rear of the house.
The large window at junction of the existing house rear wall and the new extension is extended onto the roof of the single-storey element of the rear extension as a frameless rooflight providing dramatic views of the juxtaposition of new against the old, while allowing daylight to be spilled into the formal dining room, set within the footprint of the original house.
Our client’s love of water has also been incorporated into our design as a water feature/pool along the side elevation of the house. The new tall glazed slot allows you to take advantage of the views of the new pool, providing a moment of contemplative quality.
